Frobot Interview: The Sequel – Night of the Living Lim

The long awaited sequel to our two part Frobot Interview feature, this time, with the games’ lead artist Peter Lim.
Frobot is one of the most original characters I’ve seen in a while. Is he based on anyone, or perhaps a meld of different personalities?
Lim: No, Frobot wasn’t really based off anyone, but at the time I watched Saturday Night Fever and couple blaxploitation films for inspiration. So you could say he’s the baby of John Travolta and Foxy Brown. If anything, he evolved into what he is now. He actually was a rectangular character for a while and then from there he was a spinning pyramid with with a box head. Then somewhere along the way he sprouted a fro and the rest of his body just naturally came to be. I’m really being serious. Haha.
Disco has been dead for quite some time now. Is there a reason you decided to go with such a risky theme?
Lim: Well, you could say the game also evolved into it’s current state. The original game was actually a grand space opera with robots fighting in a great war. Then the game got scaled down to a story about a robot that had to stop a spaceship’s AI that had gone amuck. The bad guys were once originally turtles! Again I am being serious. As the main character grew his fro out, it seems only natural that the rest of the game would change and the disco theme seemed like a natural fit. Actually, the game isn’t disco themed at all, the disco is only the first level, people have probably gotten this impression because we haven’t shown much of the game yet.

Someone on your team described Frobot as “what would happen if Wii Tanks and Legend of Zelda had a baby.” Considering this, who is the Ganondorf equivalent to Frobot?
Lim: Haha, well, when that was said, it was speaking more about the gameplay and design of the game. I’m not sure if there’s an actual “Ganondorf” equivalent, but there is someone who is pulling the string behind all the happenings of the game. I will let people play the game for themselves to see who it is. I think people will enjoy how the game unfolds though.
Other than Frobot, will there be other characters that we will see develop within the story?
Lim: Well the main cast consist of Frobot, his girlfriends and the main boss. As you save each girlfriend more of the zany story will uncover. Each of the girlfriends have their own unique style and personality. The main enemy of the game is somewhat mysterious and his character will also slowly be shown as you progress. The story is fairly lighthearted, so prepare to have fun and laugh!
Since the game is disco themed, can we expect to hear some funky music tracks in the game?
Lim: Yes, I can confirm that this game has a funky track. The disco is just the first world, this track will be funky. The game actually has five worlds, so the music will be tailored to each of those environments. I can not confirm the funkiness of those beats at this time.
Anything else you’d like to tell my readers about Frobot or Fugazo?
Dear Readers,
We at Fugazo have worked hard to produce a great game, so if you think it looks cool, that’s because it is! So when it’s released, please support us and you will have a great time!
Peter
And as I previously asked your colleague Eric Esteb, can you tell us just how Frobot manages to score with all the robot ladies? What do you think makes him so irresistible?
Lim: During the beginning cutscene of the game, it is mentioned that he was endowed with immeasurable freshness, I think it has something to do with that. Haha.~
Many thanks again to Peter Lim for the opportunity to interview him on what is shaping up to be an awesome title for WiiWare. If you missed Part one of this series, head on over here!
